Kiwi Jasper has the chemical formula SiO₂ + Na(Fe,Mg)₃Al₆(BO₃)₃Si₆O₁₈(OH)₄ + Ca₂Al₃(SiO₄)(Si₂O₇)O(OH) (Mn²⁺-bearing), crystallises in the cryptocrystalline composite system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. "Kiwi jasper" is a trade name for a composite ornamental stone in which a pale quartz or feldspar matrix is peppered with black schorl tourmaline needles and pink manganoan zoisite (thulite). It is not a true jasper by strict mineralogy, but it takes a high polish and behaves like one in lapidary work. The name and marketing derive from the resemblance of the polished surface to the flesh of a kiwifruit.
