Q: What is Eclogite made of?

Eclogite has the chemical formula Pyrope-almandine garnet + omphacite (Na–Ca–Al pyroxene) rock, crystallises in the aggregate (metamorphic) system and measures 6.5 – 7.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Eclogite is a rare high-pressure metamorphic rock formed when basalt or gabbro is buried to depths of 45 km or more (roughly 1.2 – 3 GPa) at moderate temperatures, typically in subduction zones. Its diagnostic assemblage of red pyrope-almandine garnet in a green omphacitic pyroxene matrix is one of the most reliable field indicators of former deep-crustal or upper-mantle conditions.
