I. The Metaphysical Reading
How the stone has been held.
Long associated with sobriety, discernment, and quiet insight. Traditional lithotherapy places amethyst at the crown, where it is said to still an overactive mind and support restorative sleep. Greek etymology (a-methystos, 'not intoxicated') reflects centuries of use as a stone of measured thought.

II. The Scientific Reading
What the lattice actually does.
Amethyst is the violet variety of macrocrystalline quartz. Its color originates from trace ferric iron (Fe³⁺) that has been altered by natural gamma radiation, producing a color center within the SiO₂ lattice. Prolonged heating above 300–400 °C converts amethyst to citrine, demonstrating the reversibility of the color center.
