Q: What is Amethyst made of?

Amethyst has the chemical formula SiO₂, crystallises in the trigonal (α-quartz) system and measures 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Amethyst is the violet variety of macrocrystalline quartz. Its color originates from trace ferric iron (Fe³⁺) that has been altered by natural gamma radiation, producing a color center within the SiO₂ lattice. Prolonged heating above 300–400 °C converts amethyst to citrine, demonstrating the reversibility of the color center.
