Aurichalcite has the chemical formula (Zn,Cu)₅(CO₃)₂(OH)₆, crystallises in the monoclinic system and measures 1 – 2 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Aurichalcite is a secondary basic carbonate of zinc and copper that forms in the oxidised zone of base-metal deposits, most often as fragile silky tufts of pale blue acicular crystals on limonite or matrix. Because its hardness is only 1 to 2 the crystals are easily crushed, and specimens are prized as much for their delicacy as their colour. Classic sources include the Kelly Mine in New Mexico, Bisbee in Arizona, and the ancient slag heaps of Laurion in Greece.
