Hemimorphite is a hydrous zinc silicate that forms in the oxidised zone of zinc ore deposits, typically as botryoidal blue crusts or bladed crystals on limonite gossan. The crystal structure lacks a centre of symmetry — the two ends of each crystal are morphologically different, giving the mineral its name and strong pyroelectric behaviour. The characteristic blue colour comes from trace substitution of copper for zinc.
