Black Sardonyx has the chemical formula SiO₂ (with Fe oxide colouring the sard bands), crystallises in the trigonal (microcrystalline) system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Black sardonyx is a variety of onyx in which the parallel bands alternate between jet black chalcedony and warm reddish brown sard coloured by iron oxides. It was one of the principal materials for Greek and Roman cameo carving, prized because layers of contrasting colour could be worked to leave a raised figure against a dark ground. Modern material comes largely from the Deccan Traps of India and from Brazil.
