Q: What is Aragonite made of?

Aragonite has the chemical formula CaCO₃, crystallises in the orthorhombic system and measures 3.5 – 4 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Aragonite is the orthorhombic polymorph of calcium carbonate, less stable at surface conditions than calcite but favoured in warm seawater and in most mollusc shells and coral skeletons. On geological timescales it recrystallises to calcite, which is why fossil ammonites are usually calcitic even though they were originally aragonitic. The reddish sputnik habit famous from Molina de Aragón forms by twinning across three interpenetrating pseudohexagonal axes.
