Coquimbite is a hydrated iron(III) sulphate, Fe₂(SO₄)₃·9H₂O, that forms as a secondary mineral through oxidation of pyrite in arid conditions — the Atacama Desert around Coquimbo is its type locality. It is water-soluble and slowly loses hydration in dry air, so specimens must be stored away from moisture and direct sunlight to preserve their lavender colour.
