Q: What is Geyserite made of?

Geyserite has the chemical formula SiO₂·nH₂O (amorphous opal-A), crystallises in the amorphous system and measures 5 – 6 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Geyserite is a variety of siliceous sinter — amorphous opal-A precipitated from silica-supersaturated hot-spring and geyser water as it cools at the surface. Each eruption or splash deposits a thin silica film, and successive layers build up the characteristic laminated, botryoidal and sometimes pisolitic aprons around geyser vents. It is also one of the oldest recognised habitats for microbial life on Earth.
