Cuprite has the chemical formula Cu₂O, crystallises in the isometric system and measures 3.5 – 4 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Cuprite is a copper(I) oxide and an important secondary ore of copper. Its saturated red colour and adamantine lustre make gem-quality cuprite one of the most brilliantly coloured of all minerals, though its softness limits jewellery use. Historic finds from Onganja and Tsumeb in Namibia produced world-class transparent crystals.
