What the lattice actually does.
Dendritic Opal is common (non-precious) opal that hosts manganese or iron oxide dendrites along microfractures. Turkish material from the Anatolian plateau is the market standard; the opal is silica gel that hardened at low temperature, and the dendrites grew as later hydrothermal fluids percolated through it.
