Desert Rose forms when gypsum (selenite) or barite crystallises in arid, shallow salt basins, incorporating loose sand grains into its bladed structure as it grows. Each rosette is a single mineral aggregate whose 'petals' are curved crystal plates locked around included quartz sand.
