Fossil Coral has the chemical formula SiO₂ (replacing original CaCO₃ coral skeleton), crystallises in the trigonal (microcrystalline) system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Fossil coral (agatised coral) forms when silica-rich groundwater percolates through buried reef limestone and gradually replaces the original aragonite skeleton with chalcedony, molecule by molecule, over millions of years. Tampa Bay in Florida is the classical American source, producing Miocene-age agatised colonial corals; Indonesian material from Java and Sulawesi is Eocene in age.
