Golden Sheen Obsidian has the chemical formula SiO₂-rich volcanic glass (roughly 70 – 75% SiO₂), crystallises in the amorphous system and measures 5 – 6 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Golden sheen obsidian is a rhyolitic volcanic glass in which planes of aligned microscopic gas bubbles were preserved during rapid cooling. When the glass is cut across those planes and polished, light scattered off the layered bubbles produces the characteristic golden schiller — a purely optical effect from internal structure, not from any golden mineral inclusion. The bulk material remains ordinary obsidian.
