Mugglestone has the chemical formula Fe₂O₃ + SiO₂ + fibrous crocidolite-derived quartz, crystallises in the trigonal / trigonal / orthorhombic composite system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Mugglestone, or tiger iron, is a banded metamorphic rock composed of alternating layers of red jasper, silver-grey hematite and golden tiger's eye. It formed in Precambrian banded iron formations of the Pilbara region of Western Australia, where fibrous crocidolite has been silicified into tiger's eye between iron-rich bands.
