Green Hopeite has the chemical formula Zn₃(PO₄)₂·4H₂O, crystallises in the orthorhombic system and measures 2.5 – 3 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Hopeite is a hydrated zinc phosphate that forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidised zone of zinc ore deposits, where zinc released from sulphides such as sphalerite reacts with phosphate-bearing groundwater. It was first described from the Broken Hill deposit in what is now Zambia. Its pale green colour is often attributed to trace iron or copper, and it is soft and easily damaged by acids.
