Green Kyanite

Q: What is Green Kyanite made of?

Green Kyanite has the chemical formula Al₂SiO₅ with trace Cr, V, Fe, crystallises in the triclinic system and measures 4.5 – 7 (Mohs, strongly directional) on the Mohs scale. Kyanite is a polymorph of Al₂SiO₅ — the same composition as andalusite and sillimanite, but the high-pressure phase, typical of blueschist and eclogite facies metamorphism. Its most striking physical property is anisotropic hardness: it is 4.5 along the length of the blade and 6 – 7 across it, so the same crystal will scratch a knife in one direction and be scratched by it in another. The green colour is attributed to trace chromium and vanadium.
