Lakelandite is a lapidary trade name for an ornamental welded tuff from the Borrowdale Volcanic Group of the English Lake District, an Ordovician sequence of andesitic to rhyolitic pyroclastic rocks laid down around 450 million years ago. The rock is a lithified pyroclastic flow deposit — feldspar and quartz crystals set in a fine ash matrix now recrystallised to chlorite and epidote — and the same regional geology built Cumbria's fell landscape. It takes a good polish and is used mostly in local jewellery.
