Lapis Lazuli has the chemical formula (Na,Ca)₈(AlSiO₄)₆(S,SO₄,Cl)₁₋₂, crystallises in the isometric (lazurite component) system and measures 5 – 5.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Lapis lazuli is not a single mineral but a metamorphic rock composed chiefly of the deep-blue feldspathoid lazurite, with variable calcite and pyrite. Its color comes from sulfur radical anions (S₃⁻) within the lazurite structure. The finest material, sourced from the Sar-e-Sang mines of Afghanistan for more than 6,000 years, was once more valuable than gold.
