Limonite is not a single mineral but a field term for a mixture of hydrated iron oxides, chiefly goethite and lepidocrocite, often with adsorbed water. It forms by weathering and oxidation of iron-bearing minerals and is the principal pigment in many yellow and brown earth colors.
