Goethite

Q: What is Goethite made of?

Goethite has the chemical formula α-FeO(OH), crystallises in the orthorhombic system and measures 5 – 5.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Goethite is the most common iron oxyhydroxide and the principal constituent of ordinary rust, limonite and yellow-brown ochre. It forms under oxidising conditions from the weathering of iron-bearing minerals and precipitates from iron-rich groundwater into botryoidal and stalactitic crusts. Ground goethite has been used as a pigment since the Palaeolithic.
