Q: What is Purple Jade made of?

Purple Jade has the chemical formula NaAlSi₂O₆, crystallises in the monoclinic system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Purple or lavender jade is jadeite, a sodium-aluminium pyroxene that forms only in high-pressure, low-temperature subduction settings. Its toughness comes not from hardness but from a felted mass of interlocking microscopic fibres, which resists fracture better than almost any other mineral aggregate. The lavender colour is generally linked to trace iron and manganese; because natural lavender is scarce and valuable, dyed and polymer-impregnated 'B' and 'C' jade is widespread, and laboratory testing by infrared spectroscopy is the reliable check.
