Amber Calcite has the chemical formula CaCO₃ + trace Fe/Mn, crystallises in the trigonal system and measures 3 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Amber calcite is a variety of macrocrystalline calcite whose warm colour is produced by trace ferric and manganous ions in the carbonate lattice. Like all calcite it displays strong double refraction - a clear cleavage rhomb placed on a printed line will visibly split it. The bulk of the material sold worldwide is quarried from the Salt Range in Pakistan.
