Q: What is Ammonite made of?

Ammonite has the chemical formula CaCO₃ (aragonite → calcite); ammolite variety with trace Fe, Mg, Sr, crystallises in the orthorhombic (aragonite) / trigonal (calcite) system and measures 3.5 – 4.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Ammonites are extinct marine cephalopods whose logarithmic-spiral shells fossilised through mineral replacement over 65–400 million years. The gem variety ammolite, mined from the Bearpaw Formation in Alberta, retains its original nacreous aragonite; its iridescence is a structural colour produced by stacked aragonite platelets a few hundred nanometres thick. Non-iridescent specimens are typically fully recrystallised to calcite.
