Q: What is Black Moonstone made of?

Black Moonstone has the chemical formula (K,Na)AlSi₃O₈, crystallises in the monoclinic (perthitic intergrowth) system and measures 6 – 6.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Black moonstone is a variety of orthoclase-albite feldspar in which fine perthitic intergrowths scatter light into the soft blue sheen called adularescence. Its dark ground comes from finely distributed inclusions of amphibole, biotite and hematite; when polished it retains the silvery flash of paler moonstone against a smoky base. Madagascar is currently the principal commercial source.
