Q: What is Azurite made of?

Azurite has the chemical formula Cu₃(CO₃)₂(OH)₂, crystallises in the monoclinic system and measures 3.5 – 4 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Azurite is a secondary copper mineral that forms in the weathered zone of copper deposits, where descending carbonated groundwater reacts with primary copper sulphides. Its intense blue comes from the copper ion in a carbonate framework, and it slowly alters to green malachite when exposed to moist air over centuries. Ground azurite was the principal blue pigment in European tempera painting from the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries; the classic modern crystals come from Tsumeb in Namibia and Bisbee in Arizona.
