I. The Metaphysical Reading

How the stone has been held.

Blue topaz is worked with as a stone of articulate honesty and clear intention. Practitioners set it in rings worn on the dominant hand for public speaking, teaching and any work where words become record.

II. The Scientific Reading

What the lattice actually does.

Almost all blue topaz in the trade begins as colourless topaz that is irradiated and gently heated to produce stable blue colour centres, a treatment applied since the late 1970s. Natural blue topaz does occur, notably at the Brazilian localities of Minas Gerais and at the Mason County deposit in Texas, but it is uncommon and paler than the treated material. Topaz is an aluminium fluorosilicate with excellent basal cleavage.
