Q: What is Banded Agate made of?

Banded Agate has the chemical formula SiO₂ (with trace Fe, Mn, Al colouring bands), crystallises in the trigonal (microcrystalline) system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Banded agate forms when silica-rich fluids fill gas cavities in volcanic rock and precipitate microcrystalline quartz in successive layers. Each band records a change in the chemistry, pressure or temperature of the fluid at that moment, so a single nodule can preserve millions of years of quiet inflow. Idar-Oberstein in Germany built the modern lapidary trade on agates from its own Nahe valley before turning to the vast fields of southern Brazil and Uruguay.
