Q: What is Euclase made of?

Euclase has the chemical formula BeAlSiO₄(OH), crystallises in the monoclinic system and measures 7.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Euclase is a beryllium aluminium hydroxysilicate that grows in beryl-bearing pegmatites and alpine-type fissures, producing prismatic crystals whose blue colours come from trace iron and, at Chivor, from chromium. Despite a Mohs hardness of 7.5 it has perfect one-directional cleavage — the source of its name (Greek eu-klasis, 'easily broken') — which makes it a challenging stone to cut.
