Bauxite is not a single mineral but a residual rock composed mainly of the aluminium hydroxides gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore, together with iron and titanium oxides that give it its rust colour. It forms in humid tropical climates when prolonged weathering leaches silica and other soluble elements from parent rock, leaving a pisolitic mass of aluminium-rich nodules. Bauxite is the world's principal ore of aluminium, mined at enormous scale from lateritic plateaus in Australia, Guinea and Brazil.
