Brown Dravite Tourmaline has the chemical formula NaMg₃Al₆(BO₃)₃Si₆O₁₈(OH)₄, crystallises in the trigonal system and measures 7 – 7.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Dravite is the magnesium end-member of the tourmaline group, first described from the Drave River valley of Carinthia in 1883. Its brown colour comes from a combination of iron and titanium substituting for magnesium in the octahedral sites of the trigonal borosilicate structure. Major sources include the Yinnietharra field in Western Australia and the Merelani Hills of Tanzania.
