Q: What is Black Amethyst made of?

Black Amethyst has the chemical formula SiO₂ with Fe₂O₃ and FeO(OH) inclusions, crystallises in the trigonal system and measures 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Black amethyst is a variety of amethyst whose deep colour comes from dense inclusions of hematite and goethite grown into the quartz during crystallisation. The classical source is the Artigas department of northern Uruguay, where basalt-hosted geodes carry unusually dark violet crystals lined onto black-stained agate walls. Held to the light the near-opaque material reveals the true purple of amethyst at its edges.
