Q: What is Botswana Agate made of?

Botswana Agate has the chemical formula SiO₂ (microcrystalline quartz), crystallises in the trigonal (banded chalcedony) system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Botswana agate is a distinctively fine-banded chalcedony from a small area of the Bobonong district in eastern Botswana, formed in Karoo-age volcanic host rock. Its unusually thin, evenly spaced bands of pink, grey and white are the result of very slow rhythmic silica precipitation and are difficult to reproduce in agate from any other locality.
