Black Kyanite has the chemical formula Al₂SiO₅, crystallises in the triclinic system and measures 4 – 7.5 (highly anisotropic) on the Mohs scale. Black kyanite is a variety of the aluminium silicate kyanite whose colour comes from carbon and iron oxide inclusions in a fan-shaped triclinic aggregate. It shares the unusual property of directional hardness: about 4 along the blade and 7 across it. The Bahia deposit in Brazil is presently the world's principal commercial source of the fan-form black material.
