Apple Aura Quartz has the chemical formula SiO₂ + Ni vapour deposit, crystallises in the trigonal (host quartz) system and measures 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Apple aura is bonded quartz. Clear crystals are heated under vacuum and dressed with a vapour of nickel, whose thin metallic film sits permanently on the crystal surface. Its green colour is not pigmentary but an optical thin-film interference effect, the same physics that colours a soap bubble, applied here to a mineral substrate that preserves the sheen indefinitely.
