Blue Jay Sapphire has the chemical formula Al₂O₃ with trace Fe and Ti, crystallises in the trigonal system and measures 9 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Sapphire is the blue gem variety of corundum, aluminium oxide with trace iron and titanium responsible for the colour through an intervalence charge transfer. It is the second hardest natural mineral after diamond and has been mined from the gem gravels of Sri Lanka for more than two thousand years. Modern production is dominated by the Ilakaka district of Madagascar and by the Australian basalt-hosted fields at Anakie and Inverell.
