Blue John Fluorite has the chemical formula CaF₂, crystallises in the cubic (banded massive habit) system and measures 4 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Blue John is a banded variety of fluorite mined from only two hills near Castleton in Derbyshire, England: Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern. Its distinctive purple-blue and yellow bands formed within limestone cavities by episodic precipitation from hydrothermal fluids in the Carboniferous. The stone has been carved into vases and ornaments since the eighteenth century, and current extraction is limited to a few tonnes per year to conserve the deposit.
