I. The Metaphysical Reading
How the stone has been held.
Blue kyanite is worked with as a stone of alignment, physical, energetic and communicative. Practitioners hold it during meditation to steady the throat and brow, and it is one of the few stones in the modern repertoire commonly described as not needing to be cleared.

II. The Scientific Reading
What the lattice actually does.
Blue kyanite is the blade-form aluminium silicate whose colour comes from trace iron and titanium substituting into the triclinic lattice. Its most unusual property is directional hardness: about 4 along the length of the blade and up to 7.5 across it, a difference so pronounced the mineral was formerly known as disthene, meaning two strengths. High-grade specimens come from the Nuristan Province of Afghanistan and Nepal, and from the Barra do Salinas district in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
