Chrysocolla has the chemical formula (Cu,Al)₂H₂Si₂O₅(OH)₄·nH₂O, crystallises in the amorphous to microcrystalline (orthorhombic) system and measures 2.5 – 3.5 (harder when silicified) on the Mohs scale. Chrysocolla is a hydrated copper silicate that forms in the oxidised zones of copper deposits, often intergrown with malachite, azurite and quartz. Pure chrysocolla is soft and porous; the gem material sold as 'gem silica' is chrysocolla naturally impregnated with chalcedony, which raises its hardness to around 7.
