Malacolla has the chemical formula Cu₂CO₃(OH)₂ + (Cu,Al)₂H₂Si₂O₅(OH)₄·nH₂O, crystallises in the mixed (monoclinic + amorphous / orthorhombic) system and measures 2.5 – 4 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Malacolla is the trade name for a natural intergrowth of malachite and chrysocolla, both secondary copper minerals formed in the oxidized zones of copper deposits. The two species coexist as banded or mottled masses whose colors range from deep green to turquoise-blue.
