Gem Silica has the chemical formula SiO₂ chalcedony impregnated with chrysocolla (Cu,Al)₂H₂Si₂O₅(OH)₄·nH₂O, crystallises in the trigonal (host chalcedony) system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Gem silica is chrysocolla naturally impregnated with chalcedony. Pure chrysocolla — a hydrated copper silicate — is soft, porous and easily damaged; when silica-rich groundwater percolates through it and fills the pore space with cryptocrystalline chalcedony, the resulting composite reaches quartz-level hardness while keeping chrysocolla's copper-driven blue. This is why gem silica is the only chrysocolla material considered a durable gemstone.
