What the lattice actually does.
Gem silica is chrysocolla naturally impregnated with chalcedony. Pure chrysocolla — a hydrated copper silicate — is soft, porous and easily damaged; when silica-rich groundwater percolates through it and fills the pore space with cryptocrystalline chalcedony, the resulting composite reaches quartz-level hardness while keeping chrysocolla's copper-driven blue. This is why gem silica is the only chrysocolla material considered a durable gemstone.
