Q: What is Citrine made of?

Citrine has the chemical formula SiO₂, crystallises in the trigonal system and measures 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Natural citrine is uncommon. Most commercial citrine is amethyst heated to 470–560 °C, at which point the Fe³⁺ color center collapses and the stone shifts to warm yellow. Natural specimens tend toward pale, smoky-honey tones; the intense reddish-orange 'Madeira' citrines are almost universally heat-treated.
