Hyacinth Jasper has the chemical formula SiO₂ with Fe₂O₃ / FeOOH pigment, crystallises in the trigonal (microcrystalline) system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Hyacinth jasper is a trade name for warm-orange to reddish-brown jasper — an opaque microcrystalline quartz coloured by finely dispersed hematite and goethite. Like all jaspers it forms as silica-rich fluids replace and cement earlier sediments or volcanic ash, sealing iron oxide pigments into a dense, tough matrix that takes an excellent polish. Colour varies with the ratio of hematite (red) to goethite (yellow) in the pigment.
