Selenite has the chemical formula CaSO₄·2H₂O, crystallises in the monoclinic system and measures 2 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Selenite is the transparent, cleaved variety of gypsum. Its perfect single-plane cleavage produces the paper-thin, flexible sheets used historically as window glazing.
