Colombianite has the chemical formula SiO₂-rich natural glass (~70 – 76% SiO₂), crystallises in the amorphous system and measures 5 – 6 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Colombianite is a dark, glassy volcanic silica-rich natural glass found in Colombia's Cauca Valley whose origin is debated: it has been treated by some authors as a tektite-like impact glass, but the majority of recent geochemistry points to a terrestrial pyroclastic source (obsidian-like) rather than a meteoritic one. Its high silica content and rapid quenching give it the classic conchoidal fracture of natural glass.
