Flower Obsidian has the chemical formula SiO₂ (~70 – 75%) glass with cristobalite spherulites, crystallises in the amorphous with radiating microcrystals system and measures 5 – 6 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Flower obsidian — sold overlappingly with snowflake obsidian — is a rhyolitic volcanic glass in which slow devitrification during cooling nucleated radial sprays of cristobalite (a high-temperature SiO₂ polymorph) within the glass, producing the pale bloom-like spherulites against a black glass ground.
