Nuummite has the chemical formula (Mg,Fe)₇Si₈O₂₂(OH)₂ intergrowth, crystallises in the orthorhombic system and measures 5.5 – 6 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Nuummite is a metamorphic rock made of intergrown anthophyllite and gedrite amphibole crystals that produce striking play-of-colour by light interference. It comes from the Nuuk region of Greenland and dates to around three billion years old, among the oldest rocks used as a gem material.
