Apache Tear

Q: What is Apache Tear made of?

Apache Tear has the chemical formula SiO₂ (70 – 75 %) with Al, Na, K, Fe, crystallises in the amorphous (glass) system and measures 5 – 5.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Apache tears are small rounded nodules of obsidian, a volcanic glass produced when high-silica rhyolitic lava cools too rapidly for crystals to form. They weather out of a lighter, water-rich perlite matrix, which spalls away and leaves the harder glass cores behind. Held to light, the deep colour resolves into a translucent smoky brown, evidence of the trace iron that tints the melt.
