Dali Calcite has the chemical formula CaMg(CO₃)₂ (with CaCO₃ layers), crystallises in the trigonal system and measures 3.5 – 4 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Dali stone is a fine-grained dolomitic marble from the Cangshan range near Dali in Yunnan, in which alternating dolomite (CaMg(CO₃)₂) and calcite (CaCO₃) layers, together with trace iron and manganese oxides, produce natural landscape-like patterns. Slabs have been prized in China for over a thousand years as inset 'painting stones' whose figuring resembles ink-wash mountain scenery.
