Ethiopian Welo Opal has the chemical formula SiO₂·nH₂O, crystallises in the amorphous system and measures 5.5 – 6.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Welo opal is a precious hydrophane opal from the Wollo region of northern Ethiopia, first commercially discovered in 2008. It is amorphous hydrated silica whose play-of-colour arises from diffraction of light by regularly packed sub-micron silica spheres. Being hydrophane, it absorbs water and temporarily loses translucency and colour play when wet — a trait that requires careful storage and no soaking or ultrasonic cleaning.
